Lounge

The original living room was very long, due to the extension we have reconfigured the down stairs. We will have a dining area linked to open plan kitchen on a platform where the floor level currently stands, the extended kitchen floor will be on lower ground in line with the garden. This will result in even higher ceilings. To enable this we need to segregate the current lounge to make this new dining area by building a stud wall made from timber and MDF enabling us to eventually knock down the wall that separates the current kitchen and living.

The first picture shows what the lounge looked like.
The next set of pictures display how we built the stud wall.

First we had to cut the floor boards and then insert and fix 2 new joists for the cut floorboards to sit on, same in the ceiling:

We then made the timber frame, battoned it to make it strong and covered it in MDF ready to insulate and afix plasterboard:

We also had to rip the ceiling down to sound proof and replasterboard in 12mm. Such a horrible job, we got absolutely covered in 60 years of dust taking it down and then nearly broke our arms trying to put 1.2m sheets back up. I would definitely recommend you pay someone else to do this if at all possible!

We have tried our best to sound proofing the walls by using acoustic plasterboard and insulation.

We are currently making a timber frame around the perimeter of the ceiling to create a void where we will lay LED strip lighting and spot lights. We intend to cove the edges hoping to achieve a similar result to below:

We will eventually have an L Shaped sofa under the window which will have cafe tier shutters for privacy with the TV mounted on the new wall we have built. As such we needed to move the door. Not an easy task and like all jobs filthy dirty. First we used concrete blocks to block the door, we then cut out a notch for the lintel. Once dry we used a laser level (which are amazing by the way) and angle grinder to cut out the new door slightly more to the left.
